After this morning at the Kings Hill Drive sandbagging location I realized that we have a great neighborhood. I was thrilled to see so many neighbors come together and assist in bagging the sand, moving the bags and then repeating the process again. Many of you spent hours through the Sunday night and early Monday morning to protect the homes from the swollen creek. Many grateful families are counting their blessings because of your willingness to contribute your time and energy to this pressing cause.
A small amount of organizing seems to go a long ways. We are still trying to get more block captains and complete our communication chain. I realize that there is still much work to be done and I would like to get feed back from the neighborhood. Be gentle... we are all volunteers. But I would like to know what worked and what needs improvement. Once again thank you for all your help and hang in there we still have more snow to melt.

UPDATE COMING IN JULY

Sorry about the lack of new information. We need to be self reliant for at least 72 hours and preferable longer. Being prepared in this way will give us a sense of security, peace and comfort.

The kits should be personalized to your family's needs. At a minimum the kits should include:

Food
Water
Prescription Medicine
Change of Clothes
Copies of Important Documents
Important Contact Information
Anything you cannot live without
for 72 hours.

For a more complete list of items to include see list to the right. These sites have suggested items that may or may not apply to you. Read through them and consider what you will need for your family.

There are several places where you can purchase 72 hour kits already put together. If this interest you, you can google and choose the right kit for your family and your budget.

Your items should be stored in a portable backpack or bag with wheels and placed in an accessible location in your home.

Upcoming CERT Class

There is a new CERT class being offered beginning on Saturday May 2, 2009. While we can survive weeks without food, survival without water is measured in a few short days. It is essential that each home in our area has a two week supply of water. It is recommended that we store 1 gallon of water per person per day. That would be 14 gallons of water per person for a two week period.
There are many ways to store water. Some people prefer the large 55-gallon drums. Some people purchase bottled water in the store. When considering how to store your water make sure it is easily accessible for each member of your household. The larger containers are very difficult to move, fill, drain, and rinse. For a household of weightlifters this is not a problem, but for an elderly person living alone a large container would be difficult to manage. Carefully consider what would work best for your in your specific situation.

Amount of water for household size:
1 person needs 14 gallons
2 persons need 28 gallons
3 persons need 42 gallons
4 persons need 56 gallons
5 persons need 70 gallons
6 persons need 84 gallons
7 persons need 98 gallons

Please remember to plan for your pets!

Welcome to the Wasatch Fault Neighborhood Blog.
